ANTIQUE PANEL FOR SALE

For sale-a unique, hand carved antique wooden panel approximately 300 years old. Of Indonesian origin, called the “Madura,” it was an entrance to petitioners seeking justice at medieval Chieftan’s Court; it is believed to be the only one of its kind. The “Madura,” 4,640 mm wide and 2,540 mm in height (15.5 ft x 8.5 ft), consists of the following parts put together using a tongue and groove fitting method. No nails have been used.

* Three horizontal beams each 4640 mm long
* Four vertical beams each 1700 mm in height
* Two sliding doors each 1700 mm in height and 930 mm wide
* Two fixed doors 1700 mm in height and 930 mm wide
* A number of decorative attachments

Though large and heavy, it can be dismantled, moved and reassembled easily by 2 men. The panel’s Asian origin and antique authenticity have been attested to in writing by a prominent Australian dealer in antiques and fine art. His report describing and certifying the “Madura” is available to interested buyers and can be sent if requested. Please see the 6 photographs attached.

Apart from its antique value, and offering an ideal hedge against currency depreciation in uncertain economic times, it is a magnificent piece of hand-carved furniture. It would clearly bestow much charm and elegance to a person’s home, an institution, such as a museum, gallery, hotel or casino, within which it occupies a prominent place, such as a grand entrance foyer. In a museum or gallery, its presence will generate visitor interest and even academic discussion because of its medieval lineage. Placed inside a particular gambling room, it could provide players, especially from Asia, with a “feel-at-home” atmosphere.

While the price of the “Madura” is negotiable, it was placed for sale (in 2003) with Elizabeth W. Douglas, (Juris Doctor-Vienna, Senior Appraiser, American Society of Art, in the field of Asian Art, and Accredited Member, International Society of Art), of China Coast, Austin, Texas, USA. In 2003, it was priced at 174,500 US dollars. It was, however, withdrawn from sale not long after as the owner, Doctor Nihal Henry, an avid collector of antique pieces, was keen to enjoy its presence in the family home for a while. Having owned it for 30 years and, because of the family’s plan to downsize to a smaller house in retirement, Dr. Nihal has decided to part with it. He claims the “Madura” has been lucky for him and the family who lives in Australia have been highly successful.

The owner will deliver, and assemble, the “Madura” to a buyer within Australia; in the case of an overseas buyer, for example living in China, they will ship the “Madura” to the buyer’s nearest port with complete instructions on its reassembly. Transportation from the port to the buyer’s chosen location will be discussed with the buyer. Payment for the Madura could be by a bank letter of credit to be cashed after delivery of the Madura.
